Cryptocurrency Frequently Asked Questions

Cryptocurrency has found its way into national headlines, business courses, social media, television, and the Internet as the currency of the future. Now, it is making its debut as a form of giving at MMI!

Simply put, cryptocurrency, or crypto, is a digital currency that exists as an alternative to traditional currencies such as U.S. dollars. Crypto lives within an online ledger and database, known as a blockchain, and can be sent to anyone, anywhere in the world. Much of the interest surrounding crypto comes from its volatility, allowing speculators to trade the currency for profit in the same way investors trade stocks. Most people think of Bitcoin or Ethereum when they hear the word crypto, and while they are currently the most widely followed, there are thousands of unique cryptocurrencies in existence today.
MMI has partnered with the Engiven platform to facilitate crypto donations to the School. It is a donation software technology that enables MMI to safely and securely receive cryptocurrency donations. To visit our donation site, CLICK HERE, and follow the prompts to complete your gift to MMI. You will be asked to provide your basic data through an electronic form, and then you will receive a URL to which you can send your cryptocurrency from your personal wallet. Immediately upon receiving a donation, Engiven manages MMI’s account on the Gemini platform and exchanges the cryptocurrency for its U.S. dollar equivalent which is subsequently transferred to MMI. You can donate more than 40 different cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. The Engiven platform provides a comprehensive list of accepted currencies. Any gifts contemplated from currencies not listed in the online platform will be evaluated prior to acceptance based on access, volatility, and applicable exchange fees.
A Non-Fungible Token (NFT) is a digital file, often a photo, video or audio, that uses the crypto blockchain to give proof of ownership. NFTs can be bought or sold on platforms like OpenSea and Rarible. Like virtual baseball cards, each one is unique and traceable. One draw to owning an NFT is the expectation that the value of the token will go up over the long-term. Currently, NFTs cannot be donated directly to MMI. However, the proceeds of an NFT sold at auction can be donated like any other crypto donation.

Donating cryptocurrency to MMI has several advantages. It’s a convenient and secure way to give to your favorite causes and help change students’ lives. As with any other gift type, donating crypto qualifies you for the tax benefits associated with a charitable contribution.

Donating cryptocurrency is also one of the most tax-efficient ways to support our School. Since the IRS considers cryptocurrency to be a noncash asset (property), a direct charitable donation is a non-taxable event. In other words, you avoid paying the capital gains tax you would incur if you just outright sold your cryptocurrency for more than you bought it for (an appreciated asset). Avoiding the capital gains tax through a direct donation also means that your gift to MMI is maximized.

First, if you wish to deduct the donation on your taxes, you must properly include your name, email and mailing address on the online giving form so MMI can send you the proper paperwork.

For crypto donations valued over $250, a standard noncash donation receipt from MMI will be required. An electronic version will be sent to you immediately once the donation has been completed.

For crypto donations valued over $500, you also must file Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contributions).

For crypto donations valued over $5,000, it will be your responsibility to receive a qualified appraisal prepared by a qualified appraiser, and have him/her sign Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contributions). A signature from a representative from MMI is also required on Form 8283 for a gift of this size. Soon after you make your gift, MMI will mail a printed noncash donation receipt with further instructions.
